This will be Black Art In America (BAIA) and Do You Basel?'s fifth year covering Art Basel Miami. 5 years ago in December of 2012, dO yOu b Asel? was launched as a campaign to bring people of color to ART BASEL / MIAMI ART WEEK.
People asked us, "how do you basel?".
Fair enough, so BAIA packed their van with art and headed to Miami to participate in Art Basel 2012. We wanted to expose our audience to what it's like to be in Miami during Basel season. So we mounted an exhibition and brought in, from Chicago, Patrick McCoy, a collector who the Wall Street Journal called "a heavyweight", to speak to our audience on how to increase the value of their collections.
We partnered with Celebrity Art Series at LMNT event space for the exhibit. What we found out was, when you open to the public they come.
But we wanted to show our followers what the official Art Basel looked and felt like, so we headed down to the Miami Convention Center.
We were on the look out for quality Black art at the main fairs. We wanted to see how the art we brought for exhibition measured up. In 2012, we did not find a lot of Black art at the main fairs ... however this would change ..
We did find these folks pictured below, every year for five years running. Always dressed for the occasion.
Coming next - we will revisit Art Africa 2012,
Look for our updates once a month for one year, as our team will be sorting through thousands of pictures we've taken over the last 5 years ... Living Basel 2 Basel.
